The Challenge
Leaping Frog Shopping Centre in Fourways had lost its spark. Once a bustling convenience hub, it had become a fragmented, underutilized space with closed shops and disconnected buildings. Our challenge was to transform it into a cohesive, welcoming environment that felt rooted in the community. But with outdated plans and a complex multi-level layout, we needed a way to see the “truth” of the structure before we could begin. That’s where Modena came in – with technology that gave us clarity and confidence from day one.
Project Goals
BAR Architects had these goals in mind:
- Reconnect three disjointed retail zones into a unified, walkable experience.
- Create a sense of place and identity that resonated with the Fourways community.
- Modernise facades and infrastructure while preserving the centre’s legacy.
- Increase dwell time through improved flow, landscaping, and playful design elements.
- Ensure architectural accuracy and reduce risk using digital scanning and modelling.
Solution
Modena introduced us to 3D laser scanning – a game-changer. Led by Noeleen Foster, their team captured millions of data points to create a precise point cloud model of the entire centre. This digital twin eliminated guesswork and gave us the confidence to design with accuracy. From there, we used Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Construction Cloud to collaborate seamlessly across disciplines. With the foundation digitally mapped, we could focus on what we do best: designing spaces that spark joy, connection, and community.
Business Outcomes
- Won a prestigious SAPOA award for retail transformation.
- Increased foot traffic and dwell time through improved layout and design.
- Enhanced community engagement, with positive social media buzz and local influencer support.
- Reduced design risk and rework thanks to accurate digital scans.
- Delivered a vibrant, future-ready retail hub that blends legacy with innovation.
Conclusion
Leaping Frog is more than a shopping centre – it’s a story of rebirth, rooted in trust, collaboration, and a few sneaky frogs. With Modena’s technology and support, we saw the invisible, planned with precision, and built something that truly belongs to the people of Fourways. It’s proof that good architecture begins with good relationships – and the right tools.
