Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI)

Empowering In-House Engineering Excellence

Harnessing advanced design tools to enhance public infrastructure projects.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has elevated its project execution capabilities by integrating Autodesk software into its operations. This strategic move has enabled the department to undertake complex infrastructure projects internally, resulting in significant cost savings and improved service delivery.

We had two options to resolve this problem: use a consultant, which is time-consuming and costly, or run this project in-house. We chose the latter, resulting in major cost and time savings. — Michael Tladi, Directorate: Mechanical Engineering, DPWI

The Challenge

At Durban’s Westville Prison, the failure of two coal-fired boilers compromised the facility’s steam supply, essential for daily operations. The DPWI needed a swift and cost-effective solution to replace the boilers and restore full functionality. Traditionally reliant on external consultants for such projects, the department faced potential delays and high costs

Project Goals

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure aimed to:

  • Rapidly design and implement a solution to replace the malfunctioning boilers.
  • Reduce dependency on external consultants by leveraging in-house expertise.
  • Achieve substantial cost savings without compromising on quality.
  • Enhance the technical skills of internal engineers through practical application.

Solution

The DPWI’s mechanical engineering team utilized Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit to design a new boiler system. The plan included installing three coal-fired boilers capable of generating 10,000 kg/hr of steam at 700 kPa. By creating detailed 3D models and process flow diagrams, the team ensured precise planning and execution. This approach facilitated clear communication among stakeholders and streamlined the implementation process.

Business Outcomes

  • Cost Efficiency: By handling the project internally, the DPWI saved approximately R14 million in consultant fees.
  • Time Savings: The in-house team completed the design phase approximately 60% faster than if external consultants had been engaged.
  • Skill Enhancement: Engineers gained hands-on experience with advanced design software, bolstering the department’s internal capabilities.
  • Improved Maintenance: Detailed in-house designs provided comprehensive documentation, aiding future maintenance and reducing reliance on external parties.

Conclusion

The DPWI’s strategic adoption of Autodesk software has transformed its approach to infrastructure projects. By developing internal expertise, the department has achieved significant cost and time efficiencies, setting a precedent for future projects and enhancing its role as the government’s infrastructure custodian.

Historically, we never produced 3D models, but Autodesk software has allowed us to visualize equipment before installation, enhancing our understanding and execution.
